ART EXPLORATION #3 : Fine Art Critique

What is going on in the work of art?

Peter Paul Rubens' The Massacre of the Innocents Rubens

My Initial Reaction

When I toured the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Massacre of the Innocents Rubens was the first piece of artwork that provoked a combination of emotions. I was exceptionally intrigued by this piece of art because I saw so much happening within one painting. To the right of the piece, there is the baby being taken away from the woman. To an extext, I believe that this piece elicits certain characteristics in classifying gender roles and levels of authority in the 1600s. I interpret the muscular man as a representation of masculinity and power in the 1600s and the poor woman as weak and helpless to protect her child.  I also find this piece exceptionally interesting because Rubens was able to bring out so many emotions within a piece of artwork, through the facial expressions painted of the many characters within the piece.  I feel that this piece is alive and truly surreal with amazing three-dimensional effect, emerging a wonderful representation of the lifestyle of their era.

ART EXPLORATION #2 - Instant Sculpture - I call it: Pondering "Time" -

Many ideas flowed in my mind when we were assigned to gather materials to form a sculpture. This task became a little difficult for me to decide which idea to settle upon to blog about. I spent many random moments here and there re-thinking my sculpture ideas, without really coming up with anything that satisfied me as a completed task to represent something of great importance to me. As a result, I eventually started running out of time to complete my blog entry for the week. The week flowed by so quickly and time was ticking as another weekly blog task was to be expectedly assigned. With this in mind, it finally occurred to me how much emphasis we place on the aspect of "Time" and how much of an impact "Time" revolves around our lives.
"Time" is not only a signicant aspect of my life; but for most of us, we operate in a timely manner. The clock is always subtly ticking and constantly running.  I finally found inspiration for this blog entry. I was inspired by the human creation of "Time" and it lead me to attempt to build a sculpture with clocks.

My Instant Sculpture

Can you imagine life without "Time"?

Time has been such a crucial aspect to our human society. There are typical outlooks in society when we talk about being on time and late. The importance of being punctual signifies respect and good character, and lateness demonstrates signs of carelessness and disorganization.  We often talk about how to manage our time better or how to be more productive with our time. When we speak about Time, we refer to our clocks, the passing of the hours and minutes. Some say Time is money because many workers are pay by the hour; while others out on the farmlands live by the sun rising by day and watching the moon settling out by night. Our dates of births are measurable by time, speed is measurable by Time, our lifespan is measured by time.   Nevertheless, every moment of our lives, we're on this system of irreversable measures of processes: "TIME".

As I towered these clocks together (take a look at my work in above mid centre), the idea had me thinking: How would life be without the creation of "Time". Afterall, it is just another human creation, isn't it?

Leaves us something to ponder about philosophically.

ART EXPLORATION #1 : Let's talk a little about the beauty of Creativity :)

Welcome.
I'd like to welcome you all to the c r e a t i v i t y  portfolio of Elizabeth Ing on the blog spot! I'm a second year student, studying in the field of Early Childhood Education at Ryerson University. I am currently enrolled in a Creative Arts class, where I will have chance to reflect on some my personal experiences and encounters during my early years that has shaped the development of my creative side today. Throughout this blog, I will be learning more about arts and creative development in young children and the impacts of creativity in their education. Feel free to follow me on this blog as I share more about my experiences and discover and learn about how my sense of creativity can create learning opportunities to young children for exciting discoveries, exploration of their imagination and development of creativity in their unique minds.

My Inspirations.

See Creativity through my eyes.
I believe that every individual is unique in their own way and there are no boundaries to the possibilities of their imagination.  Creativity is all about about letting your ideas run wild and piecing these thoughts of your own into a work of art. Creativity is all about exploring your imagination. When we take a step back and look at some of our everyday encounters in life, we realize that we are open to many opportunities to be creative and we are revealing our creativity in many aspects of our lives.

Creativity at work. Everyday Creativity.

We see everyday creativity through food preparation where we can toss a variety of ingredients together and form a refreshing new dish with a combination of those single ingredients. Creativity is shown through performance arts where dancers and singers reveal their talent through the compose of dance moves to form choreography. We listen to music and hear different versions of music like mix tapes, in which DJs are expressing creativity with their innovative work of creating remixes and bringing combinations of single songs together.

In the field of Early childhood education, educators often express their creativity through designing the classroom environment and planning of activities for children's learning. I envision myself as an educator who would place great emphasis on displaying children's art work within the classroom and creating great opportunities for children to explore and gain interest in visual arts.

A glimpse of Creativity in my early years
As as child,  I always found so much flattery in exploring the art materials in the classroom. I loved the feeling of having a fresh sheet of paper in front of me and progressively transforming the blank page to a piece of artwork of my own. I remember every opportunity I had to explore in the classroom, I would find myself indulging in the rich art materials because those were my tools to new and exciting creations.

To this day, I still continue to express myself through drawing, sketching, painting and different forms of creating art. I simply find so much flattery in being able to bring out my ideas to the page because every piece of artwork is an expression of my thoughts and a story that I am telling, not with words but with a picture from my imagination.
